Family History Friday: Abigail Mead McBride

I have decided to start featuring one of my amazing ancestors each Friday in a post entitled "Family History Friday". Catchy eh? I plan to keep these features short and sweet and try to post as much of the "cool stuff" I can about these wonderful people. If you want to learn more after reading these segments, I have included several links as the bottom of the page to more information. As I stated in my previous post, I intend to ensure that everything I post is found on familysearch.org and I have provided the family search ID number if you want to go right to the source.
So with out further adieu, I am pleased to present one of my heroes, whom I named my own Abby after, the inspiring Abigail Mead McBride!

Why You Should Get to Know Her?

  • She was the first on our McBride line to join the church in 1833 after hosting the missionaries in her home in Villinova NY (Not far from Palmyra)
  • She made incredible sacrifices for her new found faith including leaving her home and thriving farm in New York to join the Saints in Kirtland.
  •  In Kirtland she and her family contributed to the building of the Kirtland temple.
  • She received her Patriartical Blessing from Joseph Smith Sr in Kirtland  (See below for the full text).
  •   She was then forced to leave Kirtland and move with the Saints to Nauvoo.
  • She received her endowments in the Nauvoo temple shortly before heading west to winter quarters and later the Salt Lake Valley.
  • She crossed the plains in 1847 at the incredible age of 77! She was one of the oldest Mormon pioneers!

Patriarical Blessing:

Patriarchal Blessing of Abigail Mead McBride:
"Abigail McBride, born in Nine Partners, Montgomery Co., N. Y., aged 66 years on the 29 day of January, 1836. "

My aged sister, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ the Redeemer of the world and by the power and authority of the priesthood, I lay my hands on the head, and on the heads of thy posterity, confer a blessing. "Thou hast had sorrow and affliction, out of which the Lord is delivering thee. He has established thy faith. Thy hast obeyed the gospel of thy Savior, thy name is written in the Lamb's book of life. Thou are of the lineage of Abraham. If thou holdest on thy way, the time will come when thou, like Job shall see God in the flesh, standing upon the earth. "Thou shalt see angels, and receive the communications of the Holy Ghost. Thy children shall stand in the covenant by the power of God. Thou shalt go to Zion, and be in good health. Thy mind shall be strong and rejoice in thy God. Thou shall not want the things of this life. Give up thyself to God and thou shalt see thy Redeemer whom thou desireth to know. Thou shalt be a member of the celestial world. "I seal these blessings upon thy head. I seal thee up to eternal life. Amen and Amen."

Joseph Smith Sen., Kirtland, Ohio, June 8,1836, Recorded in Book A Page 78

More Information:

  • This is a history written by a desendent of Abigial, Flora Belnap. She was an amazing dedicated family historian and we all owe a great deal to her for the work she has done regarding our McBride ansestors. Pioneer Incidents of Abigail McBride
  • This website is the mother load in regards to Abigail Mead McBride and anyone related to her. The Belnap Family (as inspired by Flora Belnap) has done an incredible job with their history. We are so lucky to be related to them through Abigail! http://www.belnapfamily.org/mcbride.htm

  1. I would like to add that this connection with Abigail McBride was one of Rachel's first touches into family history. Michael had told her about this "Great" grandma. When she started looking into records of the family she found that one of her sons had settled in Michigan where Rachel now lives. Rachel started looking for information about him and the spirit of Elijah came into her life. Way to go Rachel!
