Family Search Dilemma
I have hit a bit of a roadblock. I have been working to ensure that all my family history work is saved to familysearch.org, but I am just learning that anything that I post (pictures, stories, etc) to a living person will only be accessible by me. This is a huge bummer as one of my main purposes in doing all this is to make sure that all my relatives have access to these wonderful life histories.
Here is the scoop from familysearch about posting to a living person:
Photos for living persons you have added to your tree:
1. You can now add a photo for a living person on your tree by going to their Person page, clicking Photos and adding a photo from there.
2. You can also upload a new photo for them, tag and link it, just as you would for a deceased person.
NOTE: If you upload and tag a photo for a person, when you click on their name to link the tag to the tree, you cannot use the Search option on the pop up window, Identify this person in Family Tree, to link a living person. Search filters out living persons. Type or paste the PID into the PID field and click Link.
3. If the photo of your living person is one you added, only you will see the photos linked to them. This is true for your ancestors, spouse or children.
4. If someone else adds a photo to a living person whom they have added to their tree, even if it is your ancestor or relative, you will not see that living person or their photo.
Important things to keep in mind:
· The photo itself is still public. If you share the URL for the photo through email or social media, anyone would be able to see the photo. If Google indexes the photo from that social media, it may be found by a Google search. This may also happen if at some time Google picks up the living person where only the deceased person was tagged in the photo in FamilySearch.
· If you have a photo with two or more people in it, one who is deceased, and you tag all of the people in the photo, then others who navigate the tree and see the deceased person's photo will also see the photo of the living persons on thePHOTOS link for that deceased person. This is true of photos of living persons too. Be sure if you add a portrait for a living person that the photos associated with them on their PHOTOS link on their Person page DO NOT have living people in them. These will be seen.
· If you use FIND in Photos, it checks the living status of people in the photo and if it finds there is a living person in the photo, it will not return that photo as part of the searchresults.
· If you find a photo of yourself on Family Tree and do not wish it to be posted there, please contact FamilySearch using Get Help at the top of any page to report it.
My new plan is to save everything to both familysearch AND dropbox for my living ancestors. If anyone has any better ideas out there, please let me know!
