Eating the Elephant
I don't know where the phrase "eat an elephant" came from, but it seems pretty darn relevant to how I feel about family history. The whole concept of learning about all the thousands of people who's lives have contributed to who I am today is just mind blowing. Not only are there so many people to learn about, but there is also so much that needs to be done along the way. Their vital information needs to be recorded and shared (familysearch.org is my preferred method for this), any journals, stories, or pictures need to be collected and shared (this can now also be done on family search), and if you belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints like me you also want to make sure that all the temple work is done for the ancestors you find.
This week I am working on a article about my Grandma Bradshaw for my Family History Friday post. I was hoping to be able to just take her personal history (Yeah grandma for writing her own amazing history!) and find a few pictures to go along with it. However, as I went along I realized that just in this one part of my family tree there was an elephant worth of work to do!
Her vital information (birth date, marriage, etc.) were not on family tree, even though I am sure they are recorded several locations else where. Her personal history needed to be added to family search. I found a TON of wonderful pictures of grandma from her childhood, but now they all need to be tagged and also added to family search so that others can enjoy them as well. Plus every picture and story I have received brings up so many questions that I want to call grandma and ask her about them. See what I mean? Hello elephant!
Is this going to be the case with every single baby step I take? Will all these elephants ever get eaten? How do I keep these darn elephants from getting me down?!!!
Whew! Deep breath... so here is my plan for the elephants, but I would LOVE your ideas as well.

- I will not try to do everything at the risk of not doing anything.
- I will keep a record of all the "to do's" that I encounter a long the way. (ex. Upload and tag all of grandma's photos into familysearch) This will hopefully allow me to come back to these tasks as time allows while still giving me the ability to continue to learn about the rest of my ancestors. (I would hate to spend all my time working on one person and miss the rest of my amazing ancestors, you know?)
- I will keep this "to do" list on my blog here so that I will always know where to find it AND so that perhaps if any of my family is looking for ideas on how to help with family history I can have a list of well defined "jobs" to choose from.
Well, that is the master plan. However, I am learning as I go here so I may find a better approach latter on. But for the time being, here is my list of elephants and good luck to all of you with yours!
